- Story Text: Israel retrieved the bodies of six hostages from the Gaza Strip, the military said on Tuesday (August 20), as negotiations continued in an effort to bring back more than 100 captives who remain in the besieged Palestinian enclave.
The return of the six bodies leaves 109 hostages still believed to be held in Gaza, around a third of whom are thought to be dead, with the fate of the others unknown.
Rami Mezger, the son of hostage Yoram Mezger, one of the six whose body was returned, said Israeli authorities delayed signing a ceasefire deal and bring the hostages back alive.
"I expected Bibi Netanyahu to do the deal, or keep the deal running, until he gets everybody out. But in delaying getting to this point, when we're playing some kind of "who says what" game.... that does what? Helps who?" Mezger said.
Yoram Metzger was taken captive with his wife, Tami Metzger on October 7. Tami Metzger was released in a hostage deal in November, local media reported.
The development came as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met officials in Egypt as he visited the region on a trip aimed at bridging differences between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas over a deal to end the fighting in Gaza and secure the return of the hostages.
