- Story Text: In the coastal city of Gdansk, thousands of kilometres away from the Ukrainian frontline, volunteers meet twice a week to handcraft camouflage nets for the soldiers at the frontline.
The group, "Zjednoczeni Gdansk", is a non-profit organization established by Ukrainian refugees, some of whom have family members engaged in the conflict in Ukraine.
"My brother is part of the National Guard of Ukraine, and our efforts directly support him and his brigade," said Anna Liehotina, a co-founder of the organization whose brother is currently deployed in Chasiv Yar.
"We have many people here who contribute directly to their families and friends," she added.
The group, which also engages locals and visiting tourists in Gdansk in the project, customizes the nets based on the specific requirements of the brigades.
The soldiers provide details about their preferred colours, sizes, and netting techniques that would best blend with the local wildlife and weather conditions in different parts of the frontline.
Since initiating the project in February 2023, the group has delivered 183 nets and currently has 30 orders in the pipeline.
The completed nets are packaged with surprise gifts from local Ukrainians such as children's drawings, sweets, or jewellery, and then shipped to the soldiers.
