- Story Text: Palestinian residents of Hamad City in Gaza's Khan Younis, who had fled due to an Israeli military operation, started returning on Saturday (August 24), after the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area.
Rescue teams retrived bodies from under the rubble and the returning residents surveyed the damage and destruction in the Qatari-funded city.
Resident of Hamad City, Randa Sammour, said she came back to find her house "half gone" and said "there is no safety".
Gaza ceasefire and hostage negotiators discussed new compromise proposals in Cairo on Saturday, seeking to bridge gaps between Israel and Hamas as the U.N. reported worsening humanitarian conditions, with malnutrition soaring and polio discovered.
Residents said on Thursday (August 22) that Israeli tanks have advanced to the west, in Al-Karara and Hamad areas of Khan Younis, pushing families out of their shelters and tents, sometimes under heavy fire from tanks and drones.
The Oct. 7 attack killed 1,200 people according to Israeli tallies. Israel's Gaza campaign has killed more than 40,000 people, Palestinian health authorities say.
