(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) PALESTINIAN JEWELER IYAD HAMAD BASAL SPEAKING TO REPORTER AND SAYING: “I am Iyad Hamad Bisal, a gold trader from the Gold Market in Gaza. The area we are in, called Al-Qissariya, is the economic center of the town. The Gold Market used to be bustling with customers during the summer, especially brides, as it was a busy season in general. Today, after the war, as you can see, many traders have abandoned their shops. Some were martyred, some were displaced to the south, and some have left the country. The economic situation is devastating, and things have become very difficult here. As you can see, an economic landmark and a historical site have been all destroyed.” 6. VARIOUS OF HEAVILY DAMAGED ANCIENT GOLD MARKET AL-QISSARIYA AND GREAT OMARI MOSQUE GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE (AUGUST 24, 20244) (AAVN – ACCESS ALL) SCRIPT Gaza's historic Al-Qissariya Gold Market has been left in ruins following recent Israeli shelling, causing significant damage to one of the city's oldest marketplaces. Footage shows the extent of destruction in the Old Town, which was once home to the historical and cultural heritage of the Gaza Strip. The Old Town suffered heavy damage including Al-Qissariya and the Great Omari Mosque, which was built in the 7th century on the site of a Byzantine church. Al-Qissariya, also known as the Gold Market, is located in the northern part of the Gaza Strip and has survived from the Mamluk period to the present day. "The Gold Market used to be bustling with customers during the summer, especially with the brides, as it is a busy season in general," a Palestinian jeweler Iyad Hamad Basal told. "Today, after the war, as you can see, many traders have abandoned their shops. Some were martyred, some were displaced to the south, and some have left the country." Pointing out that the economic situation is devastating, the shop owner said: "As you can see, an economic landmark and a historical site have been all destroyed.” Israel has continued its brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip following an attack by the Palestinian group Hamas last Oct. 7, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire. The onslaught has resulted in over 40,300 Palestinian deaths, mostly women and children, and over 93,000 injuries, according to local health authorities. An ongoing blockade of Gaza has led to severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, leaving much of the region in ruins. Israel faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which has ordered a halt to military operations in the southern city of Rafah, where over one million Palestinians had sought refuge before the area was invaded on May 6.
