- Story Text: An international seminar on criminology took place in Abidjan last week (June 15-17), with delegates from Canada, Cameroun, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Upper Volta, taking part.
The seminar, organised jointly by the Abidjan institute of Criminology and the University of Montreal's International Centre for Comparative Criminology, had a its theme "Needs and perspectives of crime and treatment of offenders in West Africa."
During the three-day sessions, the delegates were divided into two sub-committees to study the different subjects under the following titles: "Criminology and development" (how to develop Africa without creating criminals); "Penology in West Africa"; "Police, tribunals and juvenile delinquency."
The closing session, on Saturday (June 17) was addressed by Tourch Yahaya, the President of the first Committee, and the Director of the Institute of Research of the University of Abidjan; by Konan Banny, President of the second Committee, and an Ivorian lawyer; and by Douglas Hogarth, Parliamentary Secretary of the Canadian Institute of Criminology.
