- Story Text: At least 73 people were killed in Pakistan's province of Balochistan when separatist militants attacked police stations, railway lines and highways and security forces launched retaliatory operations, officials said on Monday (August 26).
Chaos erupted on a highway in the Musakhail district in Balochistan, as people were seen running amid gunfire. As many as 35 vehicles were also set on fire on the highway.
Villagers were seen the following day, gathering to pray in front of dozens of bodies shrouded in white sheets during a mass funeral.
The assaults that began on Sunday (August 25), were the most widespread in years by ethnic militants seeking to win secession of the resource-rich province, home to major China-led projects such as a port and a gold and copper mine.
The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), said to have development commitments worth $65 billion, is part of Chinese President Xi Jinping's Belt and Road initiative. Pakistan has not been able to fully build the infrastructure needed to tap mineral resources in poverty-stricken Balochistan, and has sought China's help in developing the province.
