- Story Text: The Grand Chancellor of the French Legion of Honour, Admiral Georges Cabanier, was received on Monday (17 April) by President Felix Houphouet-Boigny in the presidential palace in Abidjan.
After formal talks, Admiral Cabanier gave the President the Grand Cross of the French Legion of Honour together with a medal portraiting General Charles de Gaulle.
In return, President Houphouet decorated Admiral Cabanier with the Grand Cross of the Ivory Coast National Order.
The Ivory Coast, together with most of the member countries of the former French Community south of the Sahara, has maintained close relations with France. In February 1971, President Pompidou visited the Ivory Coast--primarily to discuss economic aid. This was the first visit by a French Head of State since President de Gaulle initiated independence proceedings in 1959.
Admiral Georges Cabanier arrived in the Ivory Coat on Saturday, April, 15th, for a week's official visit.
