- Story Text: The West African Economic Community, or CEAO, which was launched at a meeting of its leaders in Abidjan in the Ivory Coat this week, groups seven nations -- the Ivory Coast, Dahomey, Niger, Upper Volta, Mauritania, Mali and Senegal. Dahomey has observer status at the organisation, while the other six nations are full members. The community was officially launched on Monday (April 16) but on Tuesday (April 17) its leaders signed a revised treaty -- covered in this film. The treaty comes into effect in January next year (1974), subject to ratification by its member nations.
The organisation's future capital is Ouagadougou, the capital of Upper Volta, and its leaders have appointed President Hamani Diori of Niger as its first chairman. Ibrahima Fall, technical advisor to the Prime Minister of Senegal, is CEAO's first secretary-general.
The community, which has been set up to expand considerable existing relations between its members in trade, agriculture, transport and communication, plans to take in other West African countries later. It supersedes the West African Customs Union.
