  • Story Text: The West African Economic Community, or CEAO, which was launched at a meeting of its leaders in Abidjan in the Ivory Coat this week, groups seven nations -- the Ivory Coast, Dahomey, Niger, Upper Volta, Mauritania, Mali and Senegal. Dahomey has observer status at the organisation, while the other six nations are full members. The community was officially launched on Monday (April 16) but on Tuesday (April 17) its leaders signed a revised treaty -- covered in this film. The treaty comes into effect in January next year (1974), subject to ratification by its member nations.

    The organisation's future capital is Ouagadougou, the capital of Upper Volta, and its leaders have appointed President Hamani Diori of Niger as its first chairman. Ibrahima Fall, technical advisor to the Prime Minister of Senegal, is CEAO's first secretary-general.

    The community, which has been set up to expand considerable existing relations between its members in trade, agriculture, transport and communication, plans to take in other West African countries later. It supersedes the West African Customs Union.

    SYNOPSIS: Leaders of the West African Economic Community signed their revised treaty in Abidjan, capital of the Ivory Coast, on Tuesday. The organisation, CEAO for short, was officially launched the previously day. The revised treaty comes into effect in January next year, provided it's been ratified by the individual member nations. At Tuesday's meeting, Ouagadougou in Upper Volta, was chosen as the future capital of CEAO, and Mr. Ibrahima Fall -- not in this film -- was chosen as its first secretary-general. He's technical advisor to the Prime Minister of Senegal.

    President Hamani Diori of Niger, who was chosen as the organisation's first chairman, was first to sign the revised treaty. The organisation links seven nations -- the Ivoruty Coast, Dahomey, Niger, Upper Volta, Mauritania, Mali and Senegal. Dahomey has observer status only, while the ???t are full members. The Community plans to take in other West African nations later.

    The community plans to extend considerably its members' relations in trade, agriculture, transport and communications. It supersedes the old West African Customs Union, which also had its headquarters in Ouagadougou.
