- Story Text: South Korea's new romantic comedy series “Love Next Door” starring K-drama sensations Jung Hae-in and Jung So-min has risen to number 5 on Netflix's Global Top 10 non-English series list this week.
In his latest role, Jung Hae-in, who played a leading character in the Netflix military action series “D.P.”, stars as a successful young architect named Choi Seung-hyo who grew up with Bae Seok-ryu, played by Korean actor Jung So-min from the hit drama series “Alchemy of Souls”.
"Love Next Door" that was released last Saturday (August 17) depicts Choi and Bae’s journey from childhood friends to enemies to lovers when Bae returns to her hometown after a series of failures and encounters Choi again.
“As an eldest daughter myself, I understand the sense of responsibility and obligation that is not explicitly imposed by anyone. Seok-ryu, my character, also has such strong feelings, and because of that, she often feels like she’s falling apart or struggling,” said Jung So-min on why the character resonated with her.
K-dramas, especially South Korea's rom-com series, have been getting more popular in recent years. In 2024, the highly-watched "Queen of Tears" stayed on Netflix’s list of Global Top 10 series (non-English category) for 15 weeks across 46 countries. "King The Land" had over 33 million views globally and over 630 million hours of view time, which was the highest in the second half of 2023, according to Netflix.
“I think (Korean romantic comedies) have a certain charm and cuteness... I guess creators really understand how to make heart-fluttering scenes," said Jung So-min.
Both actors, who started their roughly 10-year career in their 20s, said they wanted to stay healthy for their careers in order to continue playing varied characters later in life.
“I want to keep working (as an actor) and stay healthy. Since I love my job, I believe that in order for me to keep doing it for a long time, it's important to take care of my physical and mental well-being,” said Jung Hae-in, who played a young detective in the Korean crime action movie “Veteran 2” which premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
"Love Next Door,” created by director Yoo Je-won and writer Shin Ha-eun from another hit Korean drama series “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha”, airs worldwide with weekly episodes on Netflix.
