- Story Text:It was a full house at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas with former President Donald Trump making a special guest appearance at the annual Republican Jewish Coalition Leadership Summit on Thursday (September 5).
The crowd welcomed the former President, who spoke to the Jewish community in attendance via satellite video. The running Republican presidential candidate told Jewish donors that U.S. universities would lose accreditation and federal support over what he described as "antisemitic propaganda" if he is elected to the White House.
Protests roiled college campuses in spring, with students opposing Israel's military offensive in Gaza and demanding institutions stop doing business with companies that support Israel.
“There is no place for violence on the campus. What protesters are doing right now is vandalizing; for example, a couple of cases back on my campus, some of the pro-Israeli students being jumped for no reason. And it's really unprofessional, impolite, and from a law side, unacceptable,” said Nikolay Remizov, a student at St. Louis University.
Republicans have said the protests show some Democrats are antisemites who support chaos. Protest groups say that authorities have unfairly labeled their criticism of Israel's policies as antisemitic.
The crowd of more than 1,000 Republican Jewish Coalition donors in Las Vegas cheered as the ex-president appeared on screen and expressed support for Israel and the families affected by the October 7 attack.
For some of the attendees, the upcoming election is going to be a key factor in addressing the issues the Jewish community is facing.
“I think my first objective is fighting anti-Semitism and protecting the State of Israel. America first, but Israel second,” said Phil Cohen.
