- Story Text:Mexican designer Patricio Campillo is hoping his New York Fashion Week debut will help shine a light on the talent in his country.
“I think Mexico is a place full of talent, full of people willing to work and I believe that nobody grows alone,” said Campillo.
The designer said navigating his career has been complicated without the help of a fellow Mexican designer who has broken frontiers and feels the responsibility to be able to help more people to get there or much further.
Campillo will show his spring/summer collection on September 7th at an intimate space inside the Public Hotel. The line was inspired by the volcanoes Xitle, the Paricutín, the Popocatépetl in Mexico.
“Not necessarily the most obvious part of an explosion and the lava and the fire, but the whole process that volcanoes generate around them and in their ecosystem, at an aesthetic level, at a fauna level, just on the level of how they can really modify a space.”
The self-taught designer founded his clothing company in 2017. The aesthetic of the brand is based on a suit his grandfather gave his father, which was later given to him and celebrates the traditional Charro culture.
“Clothing is a way of communicating who you are without necessarily verbalizing anything about yourself. So, I think, you know, my customer is, is, is someone tolerant, is someone that, you know, is - lives an inclusive life in terms of, you know, peoples and cultures and religions. And I think it's someone that is really sensitive when it comes to getting dressed and is very mindful about the way they look.”
Earlier this year he became the first Mexican designer to advance to the semi-finals of the LVMH Prize, a foundation that supports emerging fashion designers. This exposure also came with new celebrity customers including singers Nick Jonas and Maluma.
However, the designer said he doesn’t think about it: “I just have to focus on the work rather than the attention, because that's going to, you know, allow me to keep from producing collections.”
Fashion and beauty writer Asia Milia Ware at New York Magazine’s The Cut predicted Campillo will walk away with even more attention following his NYFW appearance.
“The right eyes can land you into a retailer, which is a big goal for a lot of these designers. Or the right eyes from an editor can land you press, whether that's landing you on a cover, landing you a feature which can really just be dynamic and really life changing for these designers," said Ware.
This season they are roughly 60 designers on the official CFDA calendar including legacy brands Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren.
Ware said the most anticipated shows: “are Alaia and Off-White - they normally show in Paris, but this year they're showing in New York, and they're like the two hottest tickets to get in the city this season.”
Designers will be showcasing their spring/summer collections with some brands offering see it and buy it now options.
Ware forecasted bold reds and power shoulders to be the central theme for collections.
New York Fashion Week will run from September 6 until September 11.
