- Story Text: Thousands of South Koreans danced to the country's breakout popstar Psy's 'Gangnam Style' hit on a street in Seoul on Saturday (October 6) to promote a local street dance festival.
Psy, whose real name is Park Jai-sang, gained hundreds of online imitators with his unusual dance move, where he pretends to ride an invisible horse.
"It was meaningful to dance the 'horse-riding' moves with so many people from different areas as well as doing some flash-mops. I hope Psy's Gangnam Style will top the Billboard chart," said 25-year-old Shin Kyung-hoon, one of the local residents who joined the massive group dance.
The event was organized by the local Dongdaemun authorities. It was located in a neighbourhood in the northern part of the city, to promote its street dance festival entitled "International Dance Festival' - a one-day event held on Saturday.
"Psy's 'horse-riding' dance is internationally famous. The dance is easy to learn, so those local people could join the event. I hope local people can enjoy the festival through Psy's dance," said Nam Jeong-suk, director of the festival.
The festival organizer said had hoped to attract 30,000 people to the event, but fell short of that number saying about 10,000 people turned up.
K-pop viral phenomenon Psy, who has racked up some 360 million YouTube views, sold 294,000 digital copies in the U.S. last week of his "Gangnam Style" hit.
Billboard said Psy remains in contention for the Hot 100's No. 1 rank next week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
