- Story Text: Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo had surgery on Saturday (July 15, 2006) to remove calcium build-ups around the tendon of his knee.
His father, Nelio Nazario, accompanied the striker to hospital.
Brazil's team doctor Jose Luis Runco and Real Madrid club doctor Alfonso del Corral said that the surgery went well and that the player will require two weeks of rest before returning to Spain. There, he will continue his recovery with physical therapy.
Runco estimated Ronaldo will be able to begin training again within a month.
The doctor said that the injury did not impede Ronaldo during the World Cup and that the surgery was done to alleviate any pain he was experiencing.
"The surgery went magnificently and I hope that Ronny (Ronaldo) will be playing with us again soon," said del Corral.
A week ago, Real Madrid said Ronaldo would not need surgery on his knee and that they had advised him to rest.
Real's next game is a friendly against Real-Salt Lake in the United States on Aug. 12.
Ronaldo struggled with minor health problems and suggestions he was overweight before the World Cup, where Brazil were knocked out in the quarter-finals by France.
Two goals against Japan and one against Ghana allowed him to break the World Cup scoring record with 15 goals in the finals. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
