- Story Text: Brazil's Ronaldo inaugurates cultural centre in Rio
de Janeiro shantytown.
Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo inaugurated a cultural
centre in Rio de Janeiro's 'City of God' shantytown on
Wednesday (May 26).
The project has been financed with around 45,000 euros
(dollars) from a charity game he played at the end of 2003
and is intended to create opportunities and increased
exposure to the arts for residents.
A 120-seat theatre currently houses the Lomboko Theatre
Group and its coordinator Vania Show, said the project will
revitalise the area.
"It's the amplification of the culture inside the City
of God and the generation of employment and income for the
young people," she said.
The renovation, which should be completed by the end
of July, includes the installation of a new sound and
lighting system.
The City of God was founded in 1966 to house 3,852
local families who had been left homeless by flooding. Now,
the impoverished and crime-ridden shantytown houses 120,000
people in less than 250,000 square metres. It was made
famous by an Oscar-nominated movie last year.
Ronaldo told everyone: "I want to demonstrate my joy, my
happiness at seeing so many people happy here with such
a good project, in this theatre that soon will be working
and that will have various artists teaching whoever wants,
the children who don't want to play ball and want to study
theatre will have the opportunity to have another area in
which to learn."
He said the scheme would be the first of many.
"Besides this project, we will be doing other projects
also like this one in various countries and others here in
Brazil also but, without a doubt, this is the most
important because it's the first," he said.
