  • Story Text:New York City Mayor Eric Adams introduced Melissa Aviles-Ramos as the new New York City Public Schools Chancellor, effective January 1, 2024, at a press conference on Wednesday (September 25).
    Aviles-Ramos is a veteran of New York City Public Schools and a lifelong educator who currently serves as a deputy chancellor in the city’s education department.
    "I want you to see me as a symbol of stability, of commitments," she said.
    She is the highest-ranking Latina and Spanish-speaking leader in New York City Public Schools, Adams said.
    The current Chancellor, David Banks, was appointed on January 1, 2022. On Tuesday (September 24) he announced plans to resign from his post at the end of this year.
    “After 40 years [in public education], I'm tired. And that's the God's honest truth,” he said on Wednesday.
    Banks is the latest high-ranking official in the Adams administration to step down. On Monday (September 23) Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan announced his resignation, citing personal reasons.
    The New York City public school system is the largest in the nation. It serves 1.1 million students in over 1800 schools.
