Oscar-winning Italian film star Sophia Loren will turn 90 on Friday, September 20, 2024.
Born Sofia Scicolone in Rome 1934, she was discovered as a teenager by film producer Carlo Ponti, who secured her first roles and went on to become her husband.
A national icon in Italy, Loren won her first Oscar in 1962 for her portrayal of a war-time mother in Vittorio De Sica's neo-realistic classic "La Ciociara" (Two Women). The second was a career award in 1991.
Other awards include five Golden Globes, a BAFTA and in 1999 she was named one of the greatest stars by the American Film Institute.
Some of Loren's most memorable and successful films were made with fellow Italian co-star Marcello Mastroianni, who died in 1996. She has also co-stared with Cary Grant, Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Paul Newman, among other 20th century film giants.
Recently she starred in 2020's "La Vita Davanti a Se" (The Life Ahead) as a former prostitute and Holocaust survivor who looks after children of working prostitutes. It was directed by her son, Edoardo Ponti.
In September 2023 Loren suffered a fall at her home in Geneva and underwent surgery for a fractured femur.
