- Story Text: Air raid alert was issued twice in the Ukrainian capital on Thursday (October 3) as NATO chief Mark Rutte arrived in Kyiv on his first official trip since becoming the alliance's secretary general.
Together with Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha, Rutte commemorated fallen Ukrainian soldiers by visiting memorial wall at St. Michael's cathedral.
Before that, Rutte and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy gave joint news conference, where the NATO chief reiterated alliance's pledge that Ukraine would one day be a NATO member.
NATO officials and diplomats expect Rutte to maintain the priorities of his predecessor, Norway's Jens Stoltenberg – rallying support for Kyiv, pushing NATO countries to spend more on defense, and keeping the U.S. engaged in European security.
