Residents of the western Mexican state of Sinaloa are calling on the government to address the escalating violence sparked by infighting between the two major factions of the Sinaloa Cartel before the new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, rolls out her security strategy.
Some 142 intentional homicides were recorded in September in Sinaloa, according to the state’s prosecutor’s office, since rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel began clashing on Sept 9. In the previous months, January had the highest homicide rate with 53.
The trigger for the conflict between the two most powerful factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, a drug gang, dates back to July, when legendary trafficker and leader of one of those groupings, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, was arrested in the United States.
Zambada, 74, alleges that a senior member of the Los Chapitos, another faction of the cartel, kidnapped him and then flew him to the United States against his will.
Since fighting broke out on Sept 9, shootouts have disrupted daily life in the capital, Culiacan, where schools have had to close on some days while restaurants and shops shuttered early.
In early October, Sinaloa residents marched for peace, as ongoing violence has left them confined to their homes, with no clear end in sight. Sheinbaum, who assumed office on October 1, is expected to unveil her security plan on Tuesday.
