  • Story Text: More than 24 hours ahead of Hurricane Milton’s forecast landfall on the west coast of Florida, residents are preparing to board up their homes and ride out the storm.
    As highways leading out of the Tampa Bay area fill with evacuating Floridians, many more live well inland, away from evacuation zones, and are buying the wood and supplies needed to ride out the storm.
    Coming just weeks after Hurricane Helene, which affected but did not hit the Tampa Bay area directly, people were already stocked up with much of what they needed.
    This is one reason that Floridian Lenny Cabanero-Harvey said people have been able to get everything they need ahead of Milton.
    "Because we had enough notice, you know, people have been very serious about how big this storm is going to be. I think overall, people have just generally just been very kind. No one just hoarding a bunch of supplies." she said.
    Hurricane Milton is currently a category 5 hurricane near the coast of Mexico, and is forecast to face some weakening forced before landfall, but meteorologists remind people watching that Hurricane Katrina itself weakened to a category 3 before landfall and still had catastrophic impacts.
