- Story Text: Mozambique's capital Maputo, a city of contrasts nestled along the Indian Ocean, is preparing for presidential and legislative elections on Wednesday (October 9).
The streets were adorned with colorful election posters on Monday (October 10) as the country readies to vote.
Daniel Chapo, the ruling Frelimo party candidate and former radio announcer, is widely expected to succeed Filipe Nyusi as president. Frelimo has governed Mozambique since its independence in 1975.
A 16-year civil war between Frelimo and former guerilla movement Renamo, now the main opposition, ended in 1992 after claiming around 1 million lives. Sporadic violence has occurred around elections since then.
In 2019, the parties signed a peace accord aimed at ending years of conflict.
Mozambique, despite democratic progress, remains vulnerable to climate shocks like droughts, cyclones, and floods. Cyclone Idai, one of the worst tropical cyclones to hit Africa, struck in 2019, causing widespread damage and flooding.
The United Nations reported in August that drought has affected about 1.8 million people in central and southern Mozambique.
