- Story Text: Hurricane Milton evacuees who fled to the Atlanta Motor Speedway breathed a sigh of relief on Thursday (October 10), as it seemed their homes in Florida had escaped major damage. opened its campgrounds to evacuees seeking refuge.
More than a dozen families found shelter at the campground in Hampton, Georgia.
Evacuees like Michael Clem from Bayonet Point said this was the first storm in decades that forced him to evacuate.
“I’ve been there for 36 years in the same area. Never once have I been scared, like I got to get up and go. Maybe go to a little bit safer location, higher elevation because there were some times I lived on the water. But for the most part it was just stay where I’m at, I’m good. This is the first one in 35 years that I was scared of,” Clem said.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, as a dangerous Category 3 storm before weakening to a Category 1 as it passed through the state and moved offshore.
