- Story Text: A meteor dazzled through the sky in Rio Grande do Sul on early Monday (October 14), with it's blazing streak at night captured by a local observatory.
According to the researcher at Taquara Integrated Faculties, Carlos Fernando Jung, the atmospheric phenomenon occurred at around 00:06 local time.
In an interview with Reuters, Jung added that the long-duration meteor traveled 270 kilometers (167 miles) over the territory of Rio Grande do Sul in 5.71 seconds, practically crossing the state.
Jung explained that the bolide entered the atmosphere at an altitude of 96.6 km (60 miles) and probably exited the atmosphere at 162 km (100 miles), making it an Earth-grazing meteor: meteors that pass through the Earth's atmosphere at a very low angle and then return to space without colliding with the ground.
