A new exhibition dedicated to Marilyn Monroe opened in London on Friday (October 18), showcasing a range of personal items that once belonged to the Hollywood screen siren.
"Marilyn - The Exhibition" features a selection of the actress' photographs, letters and documents from her film production company as well as outfits and beauty products among the 250 items on display.
They come from the private collection of curator Ted Stampfer, who said he had been drawn to Monroe's "attitude, her charisma, her aura" when he first began accumulating her memorabilia.
"She was a bit vulnerable, fragile, but on the other hand, very strong, wild, ambitious, courageous in the male-dominated world in the 1950s," he told Reuters, adding he hoped exhibition visitors "would understand (Monroe's) complex character a bit better".
"It's not my idea just to present objects in... display cases. The idea is to feel the aura of Marilyn, (the) real person."
The exhibition follows the actress' life from her difficult childhood to becoming one of Hollywood's most famous faces with films like "The Seven Year Itch", "Some Like It Hot" and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes".
Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, Monroe personified 1950s glamour. Her personal relationships include marriages to baseball player Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller as well as a rumoured affair with U.S President John F. Kennedy.
Personal problems and illness marred her final years. She died in 1962 from an overdose, aged 36.
"Marilyn - The Exhibition", which takes place at Arches London Bridge, runs until February.
