This incident marks the second murder of a Mexican mayor in October.
The local community mourned the loss of Bohorquez, crediting him with significant improvements to the town during his tenure as mayor.
Oaxaca state governor, Salomon Jara Cruz, announced that the Prosecutor's office was investigating the crime and said it would not go unpunished.
Earlier in October, the mayor of Chilpancingo, the capital of Mexico's violence-ridden state of Guerrero, was murdered just days after taking office.
