- Story Text: Indonesian president Joko Widodo is set to leave office after former rival Prabowo Subianto's inauguration as president on October 20, 2024, ending a ten-year term which began with nearly unanimous public support yet ended in widespread protests and accusations of corruption and nepotism.
Born in 1961 to a humble family in the Indonesian city of Solo on Java island, he was the first Indonesian president to come from outside the political or military establishment. His rags-to-riches story and common man approach made him popular with many Indonesians.
In 2014, after two years in office as Jakarta's governor, he was nominated as the presidential candidate to run for the election. Widodo and running mate Jusuf Kalla, a popular former vice president, narrowly won the closely-fought election.
Widodo was re-elected into office in 2019 after securing 55 percent of the votes in the country's presidential elections, winning over rival Prabowo who also claimed victory and complained of widespread cheating.
Following moves that changed election laws in favour of his son Gibran Rakabuming Raka's vice-presidential seat and rising allegations of political dynasty and blatant power consolidation, Widodo's approval rating fell to its lowest level this year as he prepared to leave office after Prabowo's victory in the 2024 presidential elections.
