60-year-old Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz is a former congress member who won elections in a Republican-leaning district before becoming governor.
In the debate against Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance, Walz, the governor of Minnesota, will likely use his "regular guy" reputation to try to appeal to voters, including some independents, who view Harris, a former senator from California, as too liberal.
As governor, he has pushed a progressive agenda including free school meals, tax cuts for the middle class and expanded paid leave for Minnesota workers.
Walz was thrust onto the national political stage when he was picked by Kamala Harris to be her vice presidential candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
Walz has a diverse background that resonates with many Americans. Before entering politics, he served as a schoolteacher and a football coach, and he is a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard. His personal hobbies as a hunter and gun owner finish the mix of traditional American values the Democratic party chose to highlight since he was picked.
Walz' leadership was under the spotlight during the civil unrest the followed the death of George Floyd in 2020. Governor Walz called for an end to violent protests while advocating for swift and fair justice for the officers involved in Floyd's death.
His first official event as the vice presidential nominee saw him directly addressing the competition, where he criticized Republican candidates calling them "weird" and "creepy."
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Tim Walz stands as a central figure in the Democratic bid for the White House.
