Over the course of ten days, filmmakers and emerging talent from over 20 African countries will showcase their talents with screenings taking place across London. African countries represented include Ghana, Morocco Sierra Leone, Senegal and Zambia.
“Film Africa is trying to demonstrate the energy that [of] young filmmakers,” lead curator Keith Shiri said in an interview to Reuters. “We try to cover all the stories that are, you know, being produced in that, in that part of the world.”
The festival will open with winner of the Golden Bear at 2024 Berlinale documentary “Dahomey”, which was directed by Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop. Other films include “Nyame Mma” which tell the story of a gay man in Ghana who is grieving the death of his father and the loss his lover to heterosexual marriage and "Black People Don’t Get Depressed" which the directorial debut by Zambian- South African filmmaker, Sara Chitambo.
The UK premiere of the romance drama “Black Tea” starring Nina Mélo and Chang Han will close out the festival.
“I think is really, really, important because if is not from us, they do tend to dilute it should I say,” producer of short film “Nyame Mma” Albert Donkor told Reuters in an interview. “Add sort of a Western element to it, catering to the Western audience and not really the African audience so, I think it's very important that we tell our own stories.”
Film Africa will open to the public from Friday (October 25) and run until Sunday (November 3).
