- Story Text: There was a 'Forrest Gump' reunion at the TCL Chinese Theatre on Friday (October 25) when actors Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, as well as filmmaker Robert Zemeckis and writer Eric Roth, launched their new film 'Here', as part of the AFI (American Film Institute) film festival.
'Here' tells the story of a living room and all the people that occupied the space over the years, even before it was built. The film shows poignant vignettes of various families and is based on a graphic novel by Richard McGuire.
When asked if the film could be put in a genre, Zemeckis told Reuters, "I don't think so. I can't think of one, can you? I don't know what you would call it."
Bettany also struggled with the question, saying, "I don't know a film like it. I've never read a script like it, I've never seen a movie like it. It's really hard to put your finger on."
Hanks believes that its inability to be pigeonholed is what makes cinema so compelling.
"The only thing that matters to me as a movie goer is when I see something that I did not expect that I have never seen before, and yet speaks exactly to me. You know, sometimes that movie is is from a different culture that's got different genres. Sometimes it's set in the past, sometimes it's set in the future. But whenever you go to the cinema, you want to see an inclusive experience. Even if it's James Bond, you want to see something that remind yourself of a struggle or desire or of a wish that you might have," Hanks said.
"The nature of this movie is it's encompassing all of life, love, loss, struggle, birth, death, and all of that stuff that we can all relate to. And not a lot of movies aim for that tactile moviegoing experience that you share with 200 people, at the same time, you have a one on one relationship with the film," Hanks added.
When asked how it felt to reunite with the key people behind 'Forrest Gump', Wright said, "It's like going home to work with people that you have worked with for so many years and had such a connection, all of us, all four of us. Eric Roth, you know, he's still hanging on with us. It's amazing."
'Here' hits US cinemas on November 1.
