- Story Text:Footage of Tbilisi on a bright and warm autumn day. The city of 1.5 million people is the capital of Georgia,
a mountainous country of around 3 million people in the Caucasus region located between Russia and Turkey.
Georgia gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and has followed broadly pro-Western policies ever since.
Tbilisi is one of oldest cities in the Caucasus region. Founded in 5th century, the city combines its rich historical heritage with modern features, noticeable in city's architecture and everyday life.
'Mother of Georgia' statue, known in Georgian as Kartvlis Deda, was erected in 1958 and dominates the city centre skyline from a hilltop position. The female figure holds a bowl of wine in her left hand to greet friends, while the sword in her right hand is a warning to enemies.
The ruling party, Georgian Dream, was declared the winner of parliamentary elections held on October 26, giving it a fourth term in office.
Georgian Dream has in the last two years shifted towards pro-Russian rhetoric, accusing Western countries of seeking to drag Georgia into war with Russia. It has also deepened ties with China.
Many Georgians dislike Russia, which ruled the country for around 200 years and backs two rebel regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, that broke away from Tbilisi's control in the 1990s. Russia defeated Georgia in a five-day war in 2008.
Opinion polls show that Georgians are broadly supportive of joining the EU and NATO, but are also keen to avoid conflict with Russia, and deeply conservative on issues such as LGBT rights. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
