Members of the Muslim American community attending Friday (November 1) prayers in Washington, D.C. voiced their concerns about both presidential hopefuls ahead of Election Day.
People outside the Washington, D.C. Islamic Center said they feel unrepresented, disenchanted, and disappointed by the options, and some young voters said they are leaning towards independent candidates.
Omar Al Mukhtar, a young Muslim American voting for the first time, called out the Administration of current U.S. president Joe Biden for being responsible for the crisis in the Middle East and Gaza and said he wouldn't support the Democratic Party.
Some Arab American and Muslim voters angry at U.S. support for Israel's offensive in Gaza are shunning Democrat Kamala Harris in the presidential race to back third-party candidate Jill Stein in numbers that could deny Harris victories in battleground states that will decide Tuesday’s election.
A late August poll conducted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations advocacy group showed that in Michigan, home to a large Arab American community, 40% of Muslim voters backed the Green Party's Stein. Republican candidate Donald Trump got 18%, with Harris, Biden's vice president, trailing at 12%.
Trump has been trying to appeal to Muslim voters in Michigan promising to end conflicts and bring peace to the Middle East. Michigan has the largest Arab American population throughout the United States and it has proved essential to Democratic victories in recent presidential elections in the swing state.
