- Story Text:As the clock ticks down to one of the most hotly-contested Congressional seats in the United States, Huldah Hiltsley, a Kenyan-born American citizen is making headlines as she runs to represent Minnesota's District 38A that includes Brooklyn Park. This district is notable for its diverse population, with approximately 66% of residents identifying as people of colour, a significant portion of whom are African immigrants.
As she campaigned from door to door, Hiltsley said her candidacy represents an opportunity for this demographic to gain representation on issues that directly affect their lives.
Hiltsley, who graduated from Bethel University, said her motivation to enter politics stems from her desire to serve her community and ensure that their voices are heard in legislative matters. She believes that representation is vital in addressing the unique challenges faced by African immigrants and other communities of colour in Brooklyn Park. Her platform focuses on key issues such as affordable housing, access to quality education, healthcare equity, and economic opportunities tailored to the needs of her constituents.
Campaigning with Hiltsley was Teshite Wako, an Ethiopian-born candidate running for council seat, who said his experience also embodies the immigrant experience in pursuit of the American dream.
If elected, Hiltsley would make history as the first Kenyan-born politician to hold office in the United States.
This milestone is not just personal; it symbolizes a broader shift towards inclusivity and diversity within American politics. As more individuals from varied backgrounds seek public office, it reflects an evolving political landscape that represents diverse perspectives.
