- Story Text: Arizona Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake spoke in front of a small crowd of loyal supporters in Prescott some 100 miles (162 km) from Phoenix on the Sunday of election eve (November 4).
Arizona will hold a competitive election to fill a Senate seat vacated by Democrat-turned-independent Senator Kyrsten Sinema, who is retiring.
Kari Lake, 55, a former television journalist, first became known on the national stage when she ran for governor in 2022, narrowly losing to Democrat Katie Hobbs. This time she is hoping to expand the appeal of Trump's heavily populist message among Arizona residents who have been hit hard by skyrocketing housing costs.
Democratic U.S. Representative Ruben Gallego, a 44-year-old former Marine who served in Afghanistan, is running on a platform that focuses on gun control and immigration, both hot topics in the border state.
In her speech in Prescott Lake, she claimed her opponent's family were 'cartel members'. The claim has previously been addressed by U.S. media and proved to be lacking evidence.
Lake’s campaign was earlier asked to provide evidence for the claims about Gallego, but did not do so.
Gallego earlier wrote a memoir which mentioned his father's criminal drug history and the fact that the father abandoned the family when Gallego was young.
Arizona, a swing state which narrowly went for Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, could also play a crucial role in this year's presidential election.
