- Story Text: As Republican Donald Trump moved one step closer to U.S. election victory on Tuesday night (November 5), defeating Democrat Kamala Harris in the battleground state of North Carolina, voters in Michigan kept a close eye on results at a watch party in Kalamazoo.
"I am feeling very anxious about the results coming in," said 52-year-old Trump voter Kristin Koglin. "I pray really hard every day that whoever is in charge is going to do what's best for everyone, not just the select few. So I'm anxious to see who wins and how they're going to enact that, and just praying for peace."
The outcome remained uncertain Michigan, one of seven expected to determine the winner. With votes partially counted, Harris was behind in the state on Tuesday night.
"From what I hear, other countries are kind of looking at us right now wondering, 'how this is even this close?'" said Alaina Biddle, 43, a registered nurse and Harris supporter. "I hope that Kamala can come out with a win and we can just kind of put MAGA to bed. Hopefully the Republican Party will get the message tonight that this is not what we want."
Hours before polls closed, Trump claimed on his Truth Social site without evidence that there was "a lot of talk about massive CHEATING" in Philadelphia, echoing his false claims in 2020 that fraud had occurred in large, Democratic-dominated cities. In a subsequent post, he also asserted there was fraud in Detroit.
"I think there's going to be a lot of shenanigans and a lot of people that are going to claim a lot of things in the next few days," said 64-year-old Trump supporter Patrick Banks.
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said the state's election results were expected by noon ET (1700 GMT) on Wednesday (November 6).
