- Story Text: Republican Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday (November 06) congratulated Donald Trump on his election victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, saying it had been “a hell of a good day”.
Republicans also won a U.S. Senate majority, but McConnell plans to hand over his leadership seat in January. Neither party appeared to have an edge in the fight for control of the House of Representatives where Republicans currently hold a narrow majority.
McConnell attributed Republican gains to dissatisfaction with the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden.
“If you're looking for a simple answer, I think it was a referendum on the current administration, in part,” he said. “People were just not happy with this administration. And the Democratic nominee obviously was a part of it.”
Trump, 78, recaptured the White House on Wednesday after a campaign marked by dark rhetoric that deepened the polarization in the country, prevailing after two attempts on his life and a late decision by Democrats to run Kamala Harris when President Joe Biden withdrew from the race in July.
