- Story Text: Wildfires ravaged through Bolivia’s Madidi National Park, considered as one of the most biodiverse spots on the planet.
An estimate of 30,000 hectares have been consumed by the fire, with 15,000 hectares of pampas, or wetland savannahs, seriously affected, according to the Bolivian Association of Park Rangers.
"We flew for 30 minutes and we weren’t able to reach both ends of the wildfire in the lower Madidi’s pampas," described park ranger Radamir Sevillanos.
In La Paz, an environmental activist began a hunger strike in front of the country’s Ministry of Defense to demand action to stop the wildfires.
Madidi is considered on of the world’s most diverse spots by organizations such as Conservation International and the Wildlife Conservation Society. The park is home to an incredible array of wildlife, with over 1,200 bird species, 270 types of mammals, and hundreds of species of fish, amphibians, and reptiles.
