- Story Text: Christie's New York unveils a breathtaking range of works for its forthcoming marquee week of 20th/21st Century Art sales. Among the highlights are "The Empire of Light," "Pumpkin," and a "Grand Carpe" bar, each promising to ignite a bidding frenzy.
Marquee week opens with "MICA: THE COLLECTION OF MICA ERTEGUN Part I" on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. EST (2400 GMT), followed by the 20th Century Evening Sale an hour later. The series of sales concludes with the 21st Century Evening Sale on November 21 at 7 p.m. EST (2400 GMT).
The MICA collection's standout piece is Rene Magritte's "L’empire des Lumieres" (The Empire of Light),' with an estimated price tag of over $95 million.
"It is poised to shatter the record for any painting by Magritte or any surrealist work of art," said Max Carter, vice chairman of 20th and 21st century art at Christie’s.
The 20th Century Evening Sale will feature two masterpieces by Joan Mitchell from 1955, originating from Rockefeller University.
Carter noted, "They've been hidden away and seen only by this small circle of geniuses for 70 years. But they're being sold to fund groundbreaking science, science that changes and betters all of our lives.”
Mitchell’s “City Landscape” and “Untitled” are estimated at $15-20 million and $9-12 million, respectively.
François-Xavier Lalanne's "Unique 'Grande Carpe' Bar" sculpture made out of patinated sheet iron, nickel silver and painted wood, awaits visitors at the front entrance, and is part of the 20th Century Evening Sale, with an estimate of $6-8 million.
For the 21st Century Evening Sale, a monumental "Pumpkin" by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama will be on the auction block. The piece carries an estimated value of $6-8 million.
"The largest of the pumpkins, which you can't fail to notice as you walk into our gallery," said Carter. "The best part about these weeks is you get to sell the best of everything across these periods and each one of these sales has those moments.”
