British Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday (November 11), to mark the 106th anniversary of Armistice Day.
Armistice Day marks the end of World War One, fought out in large part on French soil between 1914 and 1918, and killing about 10 million people.
The war ended with the signing of the Armistice that brought the fighting to a halt at exactly 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918.
In keeping with tradition, Macron and Starmer laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe, signed the 'Golden Book' of visitors, and greeted army veterans and military officials.
The two leaders held a meeting at the Elysee Palace before the commemoration, to discuss the conflicts in the Middle East and in Ukraine, EU-Britain relations, defence and migration.
Starmer is the first leader to join the Armistice Day ceremony in France, since Winston Churchill made a historic visit to Paris 80 years ago, three months after the liberation of Paris.
On November 11, 1944, Churchill joined fellow war-time leader, Charles de Gaulle, in the first commemoration of Armistice Day since the occupation of France. Churchill was acclaimed by French crowds as he paraded down the Champs-Elysees with General de Gaulle.
