- Story Text: Visitors to Berlin's zoo were given a treat on Tuesday (April 29) as its newest offspring, a baby Indian rhino, was shown off to the public.
Manjula was born shortly after midday on Sunday (April 27) to her 13 year old mother, Betty and father Patna.
The 2-day old rhino is the fourth child in her family. Her youngest sister Saathi, who was born in 2005, is the only one of the babies still living in Berlin.
Although the rhinos' keeper knew about the pregancy, Manjula's birth still came as something of a surprise.
"The little baby, or the name of the little baby is Manjula, which was was decided today. She was born the day before yesterday, the 27th of April, at lunchtime or 1218 to be exact, here in the enclosure. We were expecting it but we didn't think it would happening so suddenly that she would be born outside. It's Betty's fourth child. She was born here in the zoo as was the father," said Guenther Strauss who looks after the rhinos in the zoo.
Strauss added that Indian Rhinos are an endangered species because worldwide only three thousand of them live in the wild.
Berlin's baby Manjula is the latest in a number of baby animals to have created a storm in Germany. At the beginning of April polar bear cub Flocke was presented to the public at Nuremberg zoo, as were three lion cubs at a circus in Munich. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
