- Story Text:Escalation of violent protests in India's Manipur led to the suspension of internet services for two days, the state government said in a statement on Saturday (November 16).
Three bodies, identified as those of a woman and two children, were found in a local river in Jiribam district of the northeastern state on Friday (November 15), local media reported.
Protesters broke into the residences of several legislators and vandalised their homes, including Rajkumar Imo Singh, Sapam Nishikant Singh, and Khwairakpam Raghumani Singh, local media reports said on Saturday (November 16).
Protesters were also seen damaging vehicles, burning tyres and blocking roads as they called for immediate action by the government against the ethnic clashes.
Internet and mobile data services were curbed till Monday (November 18) to avoid the spreading of false rumours which might incite protesters to worsen the law and order situation in the conflict-torn state.
Manipur has been suffering unrest since last year when the majority Meitei community and the tribal Kukis clashed after a court ordered the state government to consider extending special economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education enjoyed by the Kukis to the Meiteis as well. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
