- Story Text:Brief clashes broke out during the anniversary march in Greece on Sunday (November 17), as thousands marched in Thessaloniki and Athens to commemorate the 1973 student uprising against the military dictatorship. The marches shifted their focus to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, delivering a strong message of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
In Thessaloniki, petrol bombs exploded and protesters burned both the U.S. and Israeli flags, while in Athens the march passed by the U.S. Embassy and concluded at the Israeli Embassy.
"While the people of Palestine and Lebanon are being massacred, we must be there and shout that the Polytechnic (cause) is alive and today more than ever, it calls us to fight", says the 20-year-old student, Giorgos Vasalos.
Earlier in Athens, students carried a flag stained with the blood of those who took part in the 1973 revolt against the junta at Athens Polytechnic University, where several died after the military crashed through the gates with tanks.
In November 1973 the students had occupied the Polytechnic university for three days. On November 17, 1973, government tanks crashed through the gates of Athens Polytechnic campus, killing an unknown number of students, a fact that contributed to the junta's fall the following year.
