- Story Text: Hand-written notes by Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson detailing the characters as she developed her world-famous Moomin universe are being published for the first time.
The notes, describing the characters in Moominvalley, will be included in a special anniversary edition of “The Moomins and the Great Flood” celebrating 80 years since the book was first published.
Tove Jansson, who died in 2001, wrote “The Moomins and the Great Flood” during the second World War as a fairytale to comfort herself. It covers themes such as fleeing and seeking refuge and a sense of belonging.
The stories centre on the round-snouted Moomin family - made up of naive hero Moomin and parents Moominmamma and Moominpappa.
Sophia Jansson, who is Tove Jansson’s niece and the artistic head and chairman of Moomin Characters, said the descriptions in the notes of the Moomins and their friends Sniff, Little My, Snufkin and Filifionka, add more detail and texture to the beloved characters.
“I think the books are in many ways timeless because they centre on values that are very central to, to anyone, to human existence, really about friendship and loyalty and the feeling of belonging,” Jansson said.
Since the 1945 publication of "The Moomins and the Great Flood," adventures with the Moomins have featured in 14 novels and picture books, movies, tv-series and thousands of cartoon strips.
