- Story Text: The murder trial for a Venezuelan man accused of killing a nursing student began on Friday (November 15) in Athens, Georgia, United States.
Jose Ibarra sat quietly in the courtroom, listening to an interpreter translate the proceedings for him.
Prosecutors and witnesses say Laken Riley, whose body was found in a park on the University of Georgia's campus, left her house for a run the morning of her death.
Prosecutors say the evidence, which includes Ibarra's fingerprint on Riley's cellphone and DNA on clothing found in a dumpster, prove that Ibarra killed Riley.
"The evidence that Jose Ibarra killed Laken Riley is circumstantial,"
Laken Riley's family and friends were present during the proceedings.
Riley's death became a campaign talking point for President-elect Donald Trump throughout the 2024 election season.
Ibarra's lawyers waved trial by jury instead the trial will be decided by the judge presiding over the case, Athens-Clarke County Superior Judge H. Patrick Haggard.
