- Story Text: Manuel Mendive, one of Cuba's most renowned painters, has focussed on the relationship between man and nature in his most recent exhibition at the 15th Havana Biennial.
Taking significant inspiration from his African roots, especially from the Yoruba pantheon, Mendive mixes diverse techniques, styles and colours on a range of materials and textures to depict Cuba's landscapes and wildlife.
Nearing his 80th birthday, the artist lives far from the hustle and bustle of the capital, choosing instead to work surrounded by vegetation and chirping birds.
Mendive won Cuba's National Plastic Arts Award in 2001 and his works have been displayed in galleries around the world.
The 15th edition of the Biennial, the largest contemporary art event in Cuba and the Caribbean, will run until February 2025.
