Uruguay’s ruling party candidate, Alvaro Delgado, said he would not invite Venezuela’s President, Nicolas Maduro, to his inauguration if he wins the second-round race in Sunday’s (November 24) contested presidential election.
Delgado spoke to the media outside the polling station in Montevideo where he cast his vote, stating that he had spoken with Venezuela’s opposition candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, and opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.
Delgado declared Venezuela’s July 28 presidential vote to be fraudulent, a claim contrary to the Venezuelan election officials' and top court's assertion of Maduro's victory. The opposition maintains that tallies collected by its observers demonstrate a clear victory for Gonzalez.
The vote in the small nation of 3.4 million people sees opposition center-left candidate Yamandu Orsi take on continuity Delgado, who has the backing of a third-placed ally.
Final opinion polls suggest the Nov. 24 runoff promises to be razor tight, with fewer than 25,000 votes potentially separating the frontrunners.
