(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) MIDWIFE MIREL SAYING: “I am a traditional midwife, and we come to Plaza de la Soledad every 15 days to provide support to pregnant migrant women and migrant mothers with very young children. We provide them with health care; we monitor their pregnancy and births, if they give birth with us, and also the postpartum we encounter along the way. We also collect clothing, shoes, groceries, and objects that can be useful to them on their journey, so we have a permanent collection where we bring the objects we have to distribute among these migrant mothers. Raising a child is challenging under any circumstances, but it becomes even harder during migratory transit. You face constant uncertainty—where you'll sleep, whether you'll have food, or what the weather will bring... You can’t carry much with you, which makes parenting or pregnancy on the move even more difficult. That’s why we try to make their experience a little easier, or at the very least, offer them comfort and support when they arrive here with us." 5. VARIOUS OF MIREL TAKING CARE OF PREGNANTS 6. VARIOUS OF MIGRANT WOMEN LOOKING FOR CLOTHES ON STALLS SCRIPT Traditional midwives are providing essential care to pregnant women at the migrant camp in La Soledad Park, one of the largest in Mexico City. These migrant women live in vulnerable conditions, facing challenges such as unstable housing and uncertainty about their future as they wait for permits to either continue their journey to the United States or legalize their status in Mexico. The initiative underscores the critical role of traditional midwifery in addressing the healthcare needs of pregnant women. Every 15 days, the midwives come to help not only the pregnant women but also migrant mothers with small children. "Raising a child is challenging under any circumstances, but it becomes even harder during migratory transit," says the midwife Mirel. "You face constant uncertainty—where you'll sleep, whether you'll have food, or what the weather will bring." Pointing out that parenting or pregnancy on the move is very tough, she tells: "That’s why we try to make their experience a little easier, or at the very least, offer them comfort and support here." Hundreds of migrants fleeing their countries due to critical situations such as hunger, lack of opportunities, and violence, remain in tents in La Soledad in poor conditions.
