A 49-year-old New Zealand man was killed while visiting his parents in South Africa on Monday (November 25). He was visiting with his girlfriend and only child.
Reports from local media outlets said Eugene Robbemond was protecting his parents from a robbery after the assailants had followed them home from the bank on Mostert Street in Monte Vista, a suburb outside Cape Town.
Local media reported Robbemond tried to stop the suspects during the robbery using a sledgehammer and was fatally wounded and killed.
People from the neighbourhood left flowers and tributes attached to the gate of the house. Neighbours declined to give details about what happened during the robbery.
A resident told a local media outlet the man was the son of the intended victims of the robbery, which the Monte Vista Neighbourhood Watch group said he tried to stop.
Police said they had tracked the car used by the three suspects, but no arrests have been made.
