- Story Text: A French chocolate maker has set out on a monumental endeavour and built an almost meter-high replica of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, ahead of its re-opening.
Christophe l'Hermitte and his team spent 250 hours building the 60 kilogram (132 pound) and 90 centimetre (35 inches) structure.
"I told one of my colleagues 'Let's make a chocolate bar for Notre-Dame.' He said to me 'What if we made (the whole of) Notre-Dame?'" l'Hermitte recalls.
The miniature cathedral is made entirely of chocolate and was built using machines to carve the most sensitive details.
For l'Hermitte, the project came as both a challenge and a vibrant hommage to French architecture.
"This is about continuing to celebrate, to highlight French heritage... So cock-a-doodle-doo!"
Paris' Notre-Dame Cathedral reopens on Saturday, Dec. 7, five and a half years after fire destroyed its roof and spire and caused major damage throughout.
It remains unclear what exactly caused the fire. Authorities have ruled out arson and said an electrical fault or a burning cigarette may have been responsible.
