Summary:A bicycle of contemporary design made its appearance, along with many other two-wheelers, in New York on September 22 1970. The aim of the city's 'Bicycle Day' was to promote the bike as an alternative to the car. New York Mayor John Lindsay pedalled dutifully but most New Yorkers ignored the whole thing.
