  • Story Text:Israeli tanks were deployed along the ceasefire line between Syria and Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Sunday (December 8) as Syrian rebels declared President Bashar al-Assad's ouster after seizing control of Damascus.
    The Israeli military said on Sunday it has deployed forces in the U.N.-monitored buffer zone with Syria and at a number of points necessary for defence in lights of the latest events in the Arab country.
    The dramatic collapse of Assad's regime in Syria marks a seismic moment for the Middle East, dealing a massive blow to Russia and Iran, which have lost a key ally at the heart of the region and creating more uncertainty as the Gaza war rages.
    Israel, which has severely weakened the Iran-backed groups Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, will likely celebrate the fall of Assad, another of Iran's key regional allies. But the prospects of an Islamist group ruling Syria will likely raise concerns.
    Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the ousting of Assad on Sunday as an 'historic day' that followed the blows delivered by Israel against Assad's supporters Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
