- Story Text:Six individuals involved in migrant smuggling were apprehended in a joint operation between Guatemalan and U.S. authorities, Guatemalan government reported on Monday (November 9).
The detainees were members of the criminal organization known as ‘Los Quinos’, which smuggles migrants into the U.S.
Four of the individuals were sought by the United States due to their involvement in a 2021 deadly truck accident where 56 migrants died in southern Mexico.
In December 2021, 56 predominantly Central American migrants were killed when the truck they were traveling in crashed on a sharp curve near the Mexican city of Tuxtla Gutierrez. This accident is considered one of the deadliest involving migrants who routinely risk their lives in attempts to reach the United States.
